The Marshal’s office

Gothenburg is a city of trade that for centuries has seen goods such as lumber, iron, tea and porcelain pass through its port, traded by the Swedish East India Company and the powerful trading houses. Trade has been vital since the founding of the city and the establishment of a school in the field of commerce was a natural consequence. The Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law was founded in 1923 and three years later the Student Association, HHGS, came in place. Following financial difficulties in 1971 the school was incorporated into the University of Gothenburg and is since 1986 a standalone faculty.

The Marshal’s office is charged with the duty to protect and uphold the traditions of the school and of the student association. The Marshal’s office answers to the Inspector, an office presently held by Professor Tommy D Andersson.

A Marshal is easily recognised by the tail coat or formal dress worn with the blue and white ribbon and the student cap. The Marshals participate during formal academic ceremonies, graduation ceremonies and many other events organised by the student association and the school.  Marshals frequently also act as toastmasters.

The Marshal’s office annually awards medals and decorations to individuals for commendable services to the school and to the students. The chain of office is also passed from the incumbent president of HHGS to his or her successor via the hand of the Head Marshal.  This bridge between the past and the present is perhaps the most important task of the Marshal’s office. The Marshals’ archives and the extensive experience of its members are at the disposal of the Student Union’s elected representatives and anyone who is curious about the school, its history or the student association.

The Student Association songbook Firom, for sale in Handelsboden, is also the responsibility of the Marshal’s office and was last published in 2005.
